HYDRATION 101 WITH LUKE
Are you a glass half full or a glass half empty kind of person?
It turns out we’re all more than a half glass full of water. Men are about 60% and women about 55% made up of water, which puts a nice positive spin on proceedings at the outset.
So if we are half water already, why do we need to drink more?
We do have plenty of water but we use it to fuel the many actions, transactions and internal communications that go on under the skin every day. And it's not just water, the H2O in our body carries round essential minerals called electrolytes which act like conductors on a circuit board, and control the transmission of water and nutrients in and around our cells. They play a key role in the workings of our nervous system, brain, muscles and skin.
If you don’t stock up, you will turn into a raisin. Well, not an actual raisin, but you will get sluggish, tired, and lose focus. And if you become chronically dehydrated it can cause serious health problems.
OK, OK. No need for the doom and gloom. How do we restock our body's water supply?
Good news there! Before we even get to the tap or the fridge to drink water, we ingest about 25-30% of our daily water intake from the food that we eat. So a great way to hydrate is to eat plenty of plants or other nutrient rich, high in water foods.
Hooray! This is easy, we’re well on the way to being hydrated - now what next?
Now we drink. Water. Whether it comes straight from the tap or the filter on your fridge, that's the best thing to do. But it is not the only thing. Tea, coffee, fruit juice, even cow milk* - in fact cow milk is one of the best hydration products out there. All of these are over 90% water. So they all work.
Simple. Job done.
