PLINKERVIEW! with Allison Tanenhaus
Meet Allison Tanenhaus
One of the best things about plink! Is the awesome people we get to know! One of them is the wonderful artist and glitchily-effervescent Allison (who we may or may not be planning a haus party with... ).
Who is Allison Tanenhaus?
Abstract glitch artist, cat person
What brings you joy?
Serendipitously synching up video art to music, petting a kitty, sipping plink. Ideally all at once!
What does color mean to you?
Color is a never-ending force that activates and revitalizes my brain. Its a way to connect to the physical world in a personally sensory and emotional way that is nearly inexplicable! (i tried, tho. )
When does inspiration strike for you?
I noodle around on my own all the time to clear my head, but I'm particularly inspired when I'm collaborating. The energy of ideas, interplay of styles, motivation to create something real with someone, and the surprise of how it all comes together that gets me very pumped!
What's the cheekiest thing you've done?
Before diving deep into glitch art, i used to post typographic street art that featured satirical, thought-provoking truisms, in the form of flyers, magnets, cards, signs, stickers, and even a sanctioned public art phone box! Creating these sneaky interventions, that were free for people to enjoy, added levity to locations i passed through in my everyday life. It was deeply satisfying in a small, absurdism-loving way.
What do you hope we will fix in the future?
Humanity needs to swaparoo to completely sustainable energy sources. Like cmon! Also my boyfriend kindly requests root beerflavored plink.
What's your Saturday night look like?
I work on art projects, catch up on emails, listen to music, watch movies, play with my kitty, and stay up too late. Not much different from any other night!
What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
Make art you want to experience (believing in your work makes it way easier to promote and more worthwhile for you to create, too); ask for help; be a cheerleader and share work and news about artists you love; spread the word about opportunities; don't be a gatekeeper by hoarding resources (unless its your special sauce/proprietary technique! ). Be genuine and generous. You'll build real community, go farther in your career, and have a nice time to boot.
When do you plink?
Occasionally as a little morning fizz. Definitely as an afternoon pick-me-up. Sometimes with dinner. Often as a light late-night treat... As long as my night guard isn't in, its fair game for plinkin time!
What made you plink! For the first time?
I love me some sweet n bubbly refreshment, but i was dismayed by the weekly build-up of plastic seltzer bottles in my recycling bin. I spotted a post on dielines instagram about the genius packaging of plinktook a gander at their buoyant websiteand the pieces just came together. I order two juice boxes every month, and the teeny tiny bit of paper recycling and foil waste that it results in is a much welcome improvement.
Are you a single or double dropper?
Single! I don't like my beverages too concentrated. And part of the beauty of plink is the ability to customize the flavor saturation. One plink in filtered water poured up to the top of my koozie (yes, i keep a chilled glass with a koozie in my fridge on deck and ready for plinking at any moment) is perfection.
